New Era, Same Swagger: Jaguars Open With Statement Win Over Panthers

JACKSONVILLE, FL-The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t just start a new season on Sunday — they launched a new era. James Gladstone running the front office, Liam Coen calling shots as head coach, and Anthony Campanile directing a hungry, attacking defense. One game in, the results spoke loud: Jacksonville set the tone with a 26–10 win over the Carolina Panthers that felt like a notice to the rest of the league.

The game wasn’t flawless. Trevor Lawrence threw a pick, the team racked up 11 penalties, and the red-zone offense left points on the board. But here’s the key: the Jaguars still handled business, still pushed the Panthers around, still showed that this isn’t the same team from years past. When they stumbled, they bounced back. That’s the mark of a squad with real juice.

All eyes were on Travis Hunter, the two-way phenom making his much-hyped NFL debut. Jacksonville leaned into him on offense, and he delivered a steady six catches for 33 yards — mostly quick-hitting plays that moved the chains. On defense, Hunter logged a handful of snaps, gave up one catch for 12 yards, and stuck his man for the tackle. It wasn’t highlight-reel stuff yet, but it was efficient. He looked like a rookie who belonged, and that’s step one toward the stardom everyone expects.

While Hunter got the hype, it was tight end Brenton Strange who stole a slice of spotlight. He led the team with 59 receiving yards, making tough catches in traffic and looking like a natural fit in Coen’s motion-heavy offense. Strange isn’t flashy, but he’s sneaky dangerous — the kind of player defenses forget until he’s torching them on third down. If this offense hums the way Coen wants, Strange is going to eat.

The run game also gave clarity to a preseason question mark. All summer, folks wondered if the backfield would be a committee. Week 1 answered that quick: Travis Etienne is the RB1, no doubt. Sixteen carries for Etienne compared to Tank Bigsby’s five made the pecking order obvious. Etienne brought burst, vision, and reliability — the kind of presence you build an offense around. For a team trying to establish identity, having a clear lead dog in the backfield is priceless.

Defense, though — that’s where Jacksonville really flexed. Campanile, the new defensive coordinator, brought an energy this unit has been missing. His vision-based coverage and post-snap movement gave Bryce Young headaches all afternoon. The Panthers’ young quarterback managed just 18-of-35 passing for 154 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. His 4.4 yards per attempt told the whole story: Carolina couldn’t push the ball, couldn’t stretch the defense, couldn’t breathe.

Yes, rookie wideout Tetairoa McMillan made a few nice grabs. But outside of that, it was clamps. The secondary was flying around, reading and reacting, pouncing on mistakes. And up front, Josh Hines-Allen looked unblockable, racking up seven pressures and constantly forcing Young to bail. If this is the new defensive standard under Campanile, then the Jaguars might finally have a unit that matches their offensive talent.

Of course, this wasn’t a masterpiece. Lawrence’s interception came on a forced throw that didn’t need to happen. The 11 penalties were sloppy. And going 2-for-5 in the red zone left meat on the bone. Against better opponents, those mistakes will cost points and maybe games. But the difference now is that Jacksonville can make those mistakes and still impose their will. That’s growth.

This team has a different vibe. Coen’s fingerprints are already visible — more motion, more rhythm, more creativity on offense. Players are moving pre-snap, defenses are guessing, and the tight end is back in the spotlight. Campanile’s defense looks faster, more aggressive, more unpredictable. The mix of youthful talent and new coaching energy feels fresh, dangerous, and ready to explode.

Think back a few years, when the Jaguars would beat themselves before the opponent even got a chance. Those days feel distant now. Sunday proved they can stumble and still control the game. That’s what good teams do — they find ways, even when it’s messy.

For Hunter, Strange, Etienne, and Lawrence, the story is just beginning. For Gladstone, Coen, and Campanile, the foundation is being laid. And for Jacksonville fans, who’ve lived through too many false starts, this opener felt different. It felt like the start of something with staying power.

So yeah, Week 1 didn’t come with fireworks on every play. But it didn’t need to. What it brought was proof that Jacksonville is ready to grind, ready to punch back, ready to play like a squad that believes in itself. The scoreboard said 26–10. The tape said the Jaguars are building an identity that won’t fade when things get tough.

The season is long. The tests will get harder. But right now, the Jaguars are 1–0 in a new era, and the vibe is right. In this league, that’s everything.
