JACKSONVILLE, FL – For Rookie Wide Receiver Josh Cameron, the road to the National Football League wasn’t paved with five-star recruiting rankings or early recognition. Instead, it was built through persistence, patience and an unwavering belief that hard work would eventually create an opportunity.
That journey passed through Mobile, Alabama, earlier this year, where Cameron earned one of the biggest invitations of his football career—the 2026 Panini Senior Bowl.
For one week, the former Baylor wide receiver stood alongside many of the nation’s top senior prospects, competing in front of NFL coaches, scouts and decision-makers from across the league. Every practice rep mattered. Every route, every catch and every moment between the lines became another chance to prove he belonged.
A few months later, that opportunity became reality.
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Cameron in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 194th overall pick, adding another determined competitor to a young roster looking for players who can contribute in multiple ways.
For Cameron, it was another milestone in a football journey that has never followed the traditional path.
Long before his name appeared on NFL draft boards, Cameron was producing impressive numbers at Cedar Park High School outside Austin, Texas. Despite putting together a standout prep career and helping lead his team to the Texas state championship game, major college scholarship opportunities never arrived.
Rather than allowing that disappointment to define him, Cameron embraced the challenge.
Baylor gave him the opportunity to join the program as a preferred walk-on, a path that required him to earn everything through preparation and performance instead of reputation. While others arrived with scholarships and expectations, Cameron entered college with something to prove.
That mindset became the foundation of his career.
Over five seasons with the Bears, Cameron steadily developed into one of the Big 12’s most dependable receivers. Whether making difficult catches in traffic, delivering key blocks in the running game or contributing on special teams, he consistently showed the toughness and team-first attitude coaches value.
His development eventually led to earning a scholarship, rewarding years of commitment and proving that determination can overcome early setbacks.
That same mentality followed him to Mobile for Senior Bowl week.
The Senior Bowl is more than just a game. For many NFL prospects, it represents their final major opportunity to compete directly in front of professional evaluators before the draft. Practices throughout the week often carry as much importance as the game itself, with scouts studying every detail—from route precision and separation to competitiveness and football intelligence.
Cameron’s performance throughout the week helped showcase why NFL teams continued to watch his progress.
He displayed dependable hands, strong route discipline and the physical style that has become part of his identity. Comfortable lining up both inside and outside, Cameron showed the versatility teams look for in today’s NFL receiver. He also continued to demonstrate one of his biggest strengths—the willingness to do the work that doesn’t always appear on the stat sheet.
Blocking. Special teams. Doing whatever is asked.
Those qualities helped separate him from many other prospects and reinforced why Jacksonville believed he was worth selecting.
The Jaguars were not simply drafting another receiver. They were adding a player whose skill set matched the type of football teams need to win—tough, dependable and versatile.
Standing around 6-foot-2 and weighing approximately 215 pounds, Cameron brings a physical presence to the receiver position. He has the size to compete against defensive backs, the hands to make difficult receptions and the football awareness to understand how to impact the game beyond catching passes.
For a sixth-round selection, those traits provide valuable upside.
Since arriving in Jacksonville, Cameron has begun the transition from college standout to NFL rookie during Organized Team Activities and mandatory minicamp. Like every young receiver entering the league, he faces the challenge of learning a new offense, adjusting to the speed of the professional game and building chemistry with his new teammates.
Each practice represents another opportunity to earn trust.
The next major test arrives when training camp begins.
Jacksonville’s wide receiver room is filled with competition, featuring established veterans and several young players fighting for valuable roster positions. Making the final 53-man roster will require consistency, effort and the ability to contribute wherever opportunities appear.
For Cameron, that versatility could become his biggest advantage.
Players who can line up at multiple receiver positions, contribute on special teams and consistently execute their assignments often find ways to earn a roster spot. The NFL rewards players who can provide value in more than one area, especially when teams are making difficult decisions at the end of camp.
Nothing about Cameron’s football journey has been easy.
He was overlooked coming out of high school. He earned his opportunity as a walk-on at Baylor before becoming one of the conference’s most reliable receivers. He used Senior Bowl week in Mobile to compete against the nation’s best seniors and strengthen his case before hearing his name called on draft weekend.
Now, another chapter begins in Jacksonville.
The competition will be fierce, and earning a place on the Jaguars’ roster will require the same determination that carried him this far. But if Josh Cameron’s journey has shown anything, it is that he has never needed the easiest path to find success.
From Mobile to Jacksonville, every opportunity has been earned.
Training camp will determine whether the next one does, too.
