JACKSONVILLE, FL – On November 4, 2025, just hours before the NFL trade deadline, the Jacksonville Jaguars made one of the league’s most underrated acquisitions. Looking to provide franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence with another proven weapon, Jacksonville sent the higher of its two 2026 fourth-round selections—originally acquired from the Minnesota Vikings—along with a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for veteran wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.

It wasn’t the flashiest deal of deadline day.

It may have been one of the smartest.

Over the final nine games of the season, Meyers quickly became exactly what Jacksonville envisioned—a dependable veteran capable of making the offense more efficient. He finished his first stretch in teal and black with 42 receptions for 483 yards and three touchdowns, giving Lawrence another trusted target while helping balance a passing attack that already featured rising star Brian Thomas Jr.

The production wasn’t built on highlight-reel catches alone.

Whether it was extending drives against the Los Angeles Chargers, making timely plays versus the Indianapolis Colts, finding open windows against the New York Jets, or delivering in key AFC South moments against the Tennessee Titans, Meyers consistently reminded everyone why dependable veterans remain one of the NFL’s most valuable commodities.

His greatest impact, however, isn’t always measured in statistics.

Every defense now has another proven receiver to account for. That attention creates more favorable matchups for Thomas Jr., gives Lawrence another reliable option on third down and helps keep Jacksonville’s offense from becoming predictable. Sometimes the most important player isn’t the one making the loudest noise—it’s the one making everyone around him better.

Ironically, that’s been the story of Meyers’ football journey from the very beginning.

The road started at Lithonia High School in Georgia before continuing to North Carolina State University, where he arrived as a quarterback before embracing a move to wide receiver. The position change demanded patience and humility, but it also unlocked the skill set that would eventually carry him to the National Football League.

By the fall of 2017, Meyers was becoming one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s most dependable pass catchers. Then came a September afternoon in Tallahassee that announced his arrival on a much bigger stage.

Facing Florida State inside Doak Campbell Stadium, Meyers delivered one of the signature performances of his collegiate career. He caught five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown, averaging 22.4 yards per reception, as NC State defeated the Seminoles 27-21 before more than 73,000 fans. The performance marked his first career 100-yard receiving game while showcasing the complete package that NFL scouts would soon come to appreciate.

The numbers only told part of the story.

Against one of college football’s premier programs, Meyers consistently created separation, found soft spots in Florida State’s secondary and gave quarterback Ryan Finley a dependable target whenever the Wolfpack needed a momentum-changing play. His route running was polished, his hands were dependable and his understanding of defensive leverage stood out throughout the afternoon.

For those of us photographing the game from the sidelines, it felt like more than a breakout performance. It felt like the day a future NFL receiver introduced himself to the national conversation. Looking back years later, the same smooth route runner wearing NC State red continues making those same dependable plays wearing Jaguars teal.

Meyers finished the 2017 campaign with 52 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns, laying the groundwork for an even bigger senior season that ultimately earned him an invitation to the 2019 Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

For NFL personnel executives, the Senior Bowl has evolved into one of the league’s premier evaluation events. Every route, release and one-on-one rep is analyzed as closely as the game itself, often revealing as much about a prospect as an entire season of game film.

Meyers embraced the opportunity.

Competing against many of the nation’s top senior prospects, he displayed the same traits that had defined his college career—crisp routes, reliable hands, football intelligence and an advanced understanding of how to create separation. He wasn’t the loudest player in Mobile, but he was one of the most consistent. Every practice reinforced the belief that Meyers possessed an NFL-ready skill set built on discipline, preparation and professionalism.

Yet when the 2019 NFL Draft concluded, his name had never been called.

For many players, that would have marked the end of the dream.

For Meyers, it became motivation.

He earned a roster spot with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent and gradually transformed himself into one of the league’s most dependable possession receivers. His success continued with the Raiders before Jacksonville recognized exactly what its offense needed and made the call that brought him to Duval County.

Today, Meyers’ influence extends well beyond Sundays.

Inside the Jaguars’ wide receiver room, he has become one of the veterans helping establish the standard. Alongside Brian Thomas Jr. and second-year standout Travis Hunter, Meyers has also become an important mentor for young receivers Josh Cameron, Trebor Peña and C.J. Williams. Years of NFL experience have made him an extension of the coaching staff, helping younger teammates understand the details that separate gifted athletes from productive professionals.

That veteran presence has become invaluable for Lawrence.

Quarterbacks thrive on trust, and Meyers has spent his entire career earning exactly that. Whether converting a critical third down, uncovering late in a play or making a contested catch over the middle, he provides Jacksonville’s franchise quarterback with another dependable option every time he steps into the huddle.

The ripple effect reaches the entire offense.

As defenses devote attention to Meyers’ ability to win underneath and across the middle, Thomas Jr. finds more opportunities to attack vertically, while Jacksonville’s younger receivers continue developing within one of the deepest receiver rooms the organization has assembled in recent years. The Jaguars aren’t simply adding talent—they’re building a culture where preparation, accountability and professionalism define the position.

Few players’ careers have been documented through one camera lens quite like Meyers’. From his breakout days at NC State to the 2019 Reese’s Senior Bowl, and now through OTAs, minicamp, training camp and regular-season Sundays in Jacksonville, every chapter has reflected the same qualities that have fueled his rise: consistency, resilience and an unwavering commitment to mastering his craft.

Some players become stars.

Others become the missing piece.

If Jacksonville’s offense reaches another level this season, don’t be surprised if one of the biggest reasons isn’t the player making the most headlines, but the veteran quietly making everyone around him better.

For the Jaguars, Jakobi Meyers has become exactly that—Jacksonville’s missing piece.
