In a landmark deal that reshapes the financial landscape of the NFL, the Jacksonville Jaguars have secured their star quarterback Trevor Lawrence with a five-year contract extension worth $275 million. This agreement, which ties Lawrence with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow as the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history, was announced by the team recently.
Lawrence’s new contract includes a staggering $200 million in fully guaranteed money, making him only the fourth quarterback in NFL history to reach this milestone. He joins the elite company of fellow Clemson alumni Deshaun Watson, who secured $230 million guaranteed in his 2022 deal, Joe Burrow with $219.01 million, and Justin Herbert at $218.7 million guaranteed. Lawrence’s deal includes $142 million at signing and an average annual salary of $55 million, matching Burrow for the highest per-year salary in the league.
Notably, the contract also features a no-trade clause and will provide Lawrence with $82.6 million in cash during the first year of the extension. Entering his fourth year in the NFL, Lawrence had a fifth-year option in 2025 set for $25.7 million prior to this monumental extension.
This contract solidifies Lawrence’s position as the highest-paid player in Jaguars history, surpassing the previous record held by Josh Allen, who signed a $150 million deal over five years in April. Allen was the first player in franchise history to reach the $100 million mark, a record now dwarfed by Lawrence’s groundbreaking $200 million contract.
Despite a challenging season in which Lawrence led the NFL with 21 giveaways and finished with a 0-5 record in his last five starts, missing the playoffs, the Jaguars have made a decisive commitment to their young quarterback. Lawrence has amassed 20-plus giveaways in two of his three seasons, with his 21 fumbles lost tying Tony Banks for the most by a player in their first three seasons since the stat began being tracked in 1991. Over the past three seasons, no player has lost more fumbles than Lawrence.
However, Lawrence’s impact on the field is undeniable. He ranks fifth in quarterback wins in Jaguars history with 20 victories, and his 11,770 passing yards place him fourth in franchise history. Additionally, Lawrence has thrown 58 passing touchdowns, further cementing his role as a pivotal figure in the Jaguars’ offense. His 11,770 passing yards are the fifth-most in NFL history by a player after three seasons.
With this extension, the Jaguars are signaling their unwavering faith in Trevor Lawrence as the cornerstone of their franchise. As he becomes tied for the highest-paid quarterback in league history, Lawrence is poised to be the face of the Jaguars throughout this decade, leading them into a new era of competition and ambition.
