In a landmark achievement for post-season college football, the Reese’s Senior Bowl marks its diamond anniversary with 75 years of showcasing the best NFL Draft prospects who have completed their college eligibility. Hosted annually in early February in Mobile, Alabama, this premier all-star game not only spotlights exceptional talent but also serves as a charitable fundraiser, contributing over US $7.8 million to local and regional organizations throughout its storied history.
Produced by the non-profit Mobile Arts & Sports Association, the Senior Bowl has become a gridiron institution, attracting the attention of NFL scouts, coaches, and enthusiasts alike. With Reese’s, a distinguished brand under The Hershey Company, as its title sponsor, the game has garnered widespread recognition and is televised by the NFL Network, bringing the thrilling action to fans nationwide.
The inaugural Senior Bowl took place in 1950 at Gator Bowl Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, before finding its longstanding home at Mobile’s Ladd–Peebles Stadium until the 2020 edition. Since 2021, the game has embraced a new venue, Hancock Whitney Stadium on the University of South Alabama’s campus in Mobile.

Beyond its athletic significance, the Senior Bowl holds historical importance as the first opportunity for participants to receive payment openly for their athletic prowess. The game’s evolution is evident in the compensation amounts, starting at $343 for players in the 1950 debut and increasing to $1,500 by 1988. The cessation of player payments in 1988 aimed to limit participation to seniors whose college football eligibility had expired.
Scheduled traditionally on a Saturday in January, the Senior Bowl’s date within the month has seen variations, from an early January kickoff on occasions such as January 3 (1953 and 1959) to a late January game, as seen in the January 30 editions of 2010 and 2016. Since 1967, the game has consistently been set for the week before the NFL’s Super Bowl, aligning itself with the pinnacle of professional football.
Throughout its illustrious history, the Senior Bowl has undergone transformations in team designations. From North vs. South divisions to AFC vs. NFC in 1991, the game has evolved to its present American and National team format since 2021. The coaching staffs, selected from two NFL teams, play a crucial role in guiding and evaluating the players who emerge as potential NFL prospects.
With sponsors such as Delchamps, Food World, Under Armour, and Nike, the Senior Bowl has maintained its status as a coveted platform for emerging talent. Since 2014, Reese’s has taken the helm as the game’s primary sponsor, committing to support the event through at least the 2020 edition.
In recent years, the Senior Bowl has continued to innovate, registering “The Draft Starts In Mobile” as a service mark in March 2020. Panini America’s multi-year agreement in October 2020 to produce trading cards for Senior Bowl players further emphasizes the game’s influence and marketability.
As the Senior Bowl reaches its 75th edition, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of college football excellence. The week-long practice leading up to the game not only showcases the players’ skills but also serves as a critical evaluation period for NFL personnel, including coaches, general managers, and scouts.

The Senior Bowl has witnessed outstanding achievements, including the record ten players sent by the Alabama Crimson Tide in 1987. Notably, the National College Champions Michigan Wolverines are set to contribute eight players to this year’s game, adding a layer of excitement to the milestone edition.
Amidst its rich history, the Senior Bowl remains a vital cog in the NFL Draft machinery, providing a stage for top talents to prove their mettle and offering football enthusiasts a glimpse into the future of professional football. As the game continues to evolve, its impact on the sport’s landscape is undeniably profound, solidifying the Reese’s Senior Bowl as an enduring institution in the realm of college football.
The 75th Edition of the Reese’s Senior Bowl will at the University of South Alabama, Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Alabama on Saturday, at 12 pm CT on February 3, 2024 on the NFL Network.
